The Philosophical Research Society proudly welcomes songwriter, filmmaker, visual artist and poet Adam Green, as he joins us in person for the LA premiere of the the theatrical re-release of his singular, hilarious, and deliciously trippy modern cult classic ALADDIN (2016)!
A key figure — as one half of The Moldy Peaches — in New York’s early aughts anti-folk scene and an acclaimed singer-songwriter, Green proved himself to also be a wholly unique auteur behind the camera with his second feature film, a hyper-sensory, poetic, and humorously modern take on the Arabian Nights Classic tale, shot entirely on papier mache sets — resembling a Jodorowsky film made out of cardboard. The film revolves around Aladdin's dysfunctional family, who live in a "Regular Town" ruled by a corrupt Sultan with a decadent socialite daughter. When Aladdin finds a 3-D printing lamp, we are taken on a journey that explores technology, government repression, greed, and true love.
Starring Macaulay Culkin, Natasha Lyonne, Alia Shawkat, Jack Dishel, Francesco Clemente, and Green himself in the titular role, the immersive and subversive fantasy was described by Buzzfeed.com as “the trippiest movie ever made,” while RogerEbert.com called Aladdin “a movie that belongs inside a museum.” An instant cult hit, the movie was screened theatrically in a midnight movie context, at over a hundred of Green’s concerts around the world, as well as the Andy Warhol Museum in Philadelphia.
